Hi, I'm Sunny ☀️

I make complex AI tools
feel effortless.

I’m a product designer with a knack for technical spaces. I design to tell stories and bridge perspectives.

I’m a product designer who makes complex systems human.

For the past three years, I’ve been designing search and AI experiences that make powerful technology feel approachable and reliable. My projects range from simplifying vector search setup to building in-product AI assistance that helps developers understand their query results.

I care deeply about design that drives real outcomes. I created workflows that improved activation and adoption, and defined design patterns that scaled across multiple teams.

Beyond product work, I build spaces for learning and influence. I host weekly AI learning sessions to help our design team stay ahead of emerging trends. I also speak at events on how storytelling can influence strategy and decision-making, and mentor women in tech who are finding their voice in technical spaces.

I’m motivated by one question: how can design help people trust what they’re building?

Hi, nice to e-meet you!

I’m currently a Junior at Brown University studying Computer Science and Behavioral Decision Sciences with a joint focus on Human Computer Interaction.

As a designer, I’m relentlessly user-centric—I always take the extra mile to advocate for user’s needs. Growing up, I didn’t have much access to technology until I moved to Canada at the age of 14. As a first generation immigrant who had to overcome language, cultural and technical barriers, I personally relate to those who struggle with technology usage. I understand usability issues from their perspective. This background pushes me to design products that are more inclusive and accessible.

In addition, I strive to design for an impact. For the past two years, I created the end-to-end UI/UX of two startups—leading design sprints, rapid-prototyping, and launching products in a fast-paced setting. I’m accustomed to making calculated design decisions leveraging both data and behavioral insights, building upon iterations with an open-mind, and collaborating with engineers to bring impact to the world.

Recently, I've been hatching impactful innovations , building prototypes for visual computing research, empowering women pursuing CS, and designing an inclusive website for minorities in Data Science.

Hi there, nice to e-meet you again!

I’m Sunny Li, currently studying Computer Science and Behavioral Decision Sciences at Brown University with a joint focus on Human Computer Interaction.

I practice equity-centered design. To me, being a designer means asking the right questions, developing thoughtful processes, implementing an idea collaboratively— and above all else, advocating for real people, especially for those whose voices are less heard.

Recently, you can find me hatching impactful innovations , building prototypes for visual computing research, empowering women pursuing CS, and designing an inclusive website for minorities in Data Science.

About
About

Designer. Builder.
User Advocate.

I'm a product designer with a technical background in CS and behavioral decision science, which means I'm comfortable working through the problem before picking up Figma.

What I do

I design for people
building with AI.

At MongoDB, I work on AI and search products that help developers ship applications without needing a machine learning background. I'm drawn to problems where existing patterns don't apply and the interaction has to be invented from scratch.

I prototype extensively. I also go further than Figma: I use the tools developers use, because the best way to understand your users is to work the way they work. That's why I've leaned into AI. Building with it myself is how I find the pain points no research session would surface.

My work sits at the intersection of systems thinking, user research, and craft. But the through-line is always the same: get close to how people actually build.

How I work
Research first, then systems, then craft. I prototype in Figma, React, and Claude Code.
What I care about
Outcomes over output. Design patterns that scale. Activation, adoption, impact.
Side projects

I build things when
processes break.

When I notice friction,  in my team's workflow, in how we research, in how we share knowledge, I fix it. Sometimes that means a new process. Sometimes it means building a tool.

Advocacy & impact

Design should move
people and strategy.

I believe designers have more influence than they're often given credit for,  and I spend time helping others see that too. I mentor women in tech, host weekly AI learning sessions for our design team, and speak publicly about how designers can advocate for their work and create real change.

One thing I keep coming back to: storytelling is one of the most underused tools designers have. It's how you get a room to care about a problem before you've shown a single frame.
